About Great Southwest Adventures
Our tours go when we have a minimum of 3 people. If you are signing up online and have one or two people, please call us so we can make sure you are able to join us. 505 6455 2700.
We offer hiking in the outdoors in wonderful places and we offer van tours. Ask us about custom multi-day tours in the Four Corners area.
Great Southwest was opened in 1998 and has been doing van tours and hiking trips for thousands of people in groups large and small. We have a group of excellent, overqualified guides who work with us.
We are all knowledgeable and experienced guides with a love of New Mexico and the Four Corners region. Join us for your Great Southwest Adventure!
We operate our own vehicles for small groups and charter larger vehicles when needed. Our own vans have big windows and are easy to get in and out of. Both are newer Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans.

Our Guides:
Monique Schoustra has lived in New Mexico since 1988. Monique is our President and CEO. She also leads week-long tours in Utah and New Mexico and is an expert in the history, archaeology, landscapes and cultures of northern New Mexico. She is really fun to travel with. Monique has an MS from the University of Oregon.
Tom Ribe was born in New Mexico and has been doing outdoor education since the 1980s, first with California State Parks, then with the National Park Service and Great Southwest Adventures. He has expansive knowledge of northern New Mexico and is an advocate for public lands. He has his MS from the University of Oregon.
Dr. Carola Stearns Carola has her PhD in geology and loves every aspect of New Mexico. She also leads groups for Smithsonian in places like Morocco, Patagonia, and New Zealand. We select our guides carefully, insuring that you will have a safe and informative day.
Bruce Bannerman is our senior guide. A native of Los Alamos, he studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz, worked for the UC Reserve System in the Granite Mountains of the Mojave Desert, and has been writing, painting, and doing graphic work in Santa Fe. His knowledge of the natural and cultural world is wonderful to behold.
All of us focus on having fun and helping you to see beyond the obvious as you tour our region. Look deeply with us and see things that will surprise you. We know where the mysteries and surprises are hiding in this ancient landscape.
LaVonne Johnson is our reservation specialist. She'll greet you on the phone and do her best to get you out on a great day in New Mexico. LaVonne came from Minnesota and now works with us from her home office in Silver City with her cat and dog assistants (all rescued). She loves to share jokes, and generally enjoy life! She is there to make sure you get what you want and can talk to a human being, right now.
